A fundamental step to reducing our impact on the environment is by taking a greenhouse gas emissions inventory.

A greenhouse gas emissions inventory is a full accounting of our energy consumption, such as the energy we consume from the electric grid and transportation. By completing an inventory, we can use the data we collect to develop a plan to reduce our impact.

Taking proactive steps to protect the environment can be costly. But the Resilience Cohort, a program by Indiana University, assists local cities and towns in Indiana in completing an inventory at a fraction of the cost. The program also sends an intern for the summer to complete the inventory.

Normally an inventory can cost at least $15,000. IU pays the bulk of the cost, potentially making it possible for municipalities to pay as little as $2,100

The Northwest Indiana region is truly a region. We rely on other towns and cities in so many ways, and the effects of environmental degradation in one community affect neighboring communities too. We have a unique opportunity to make a HUGE IMPACT by understanding our collective role on our environment

How do we know what we can fix if we don’t know what’s fixable? By doing a greenhouse gas emissions inventory we will know:

  • How much emissions we contribute
  • What sources cause the most emissions

And with that knowledge, we can develop a plan to:

  • Reduce emissions cost-effectively
  • Improve public health
  • Mitigate the effects of climate change
  • Be a resilient Region that is prepared for climate change

What You Can Do

  • Sign our petition and pass it on. It’s easy for you to send a signal to our elected officials that the Region wants a greenhouse gas emissions inventory.

This inventory is a win-win. It’s affordable, it better informs our elected officials, and it challenges us to plan for a more resilient future. It’s what we expect from our elected officials. Let’s be proactive. Let’s be prepared. Let’s protect our environment and secure our future!
