Last week, Kathy Sipple and intern Brianna Lazerwitz decided to follow the Sustainable Indiana 2016‘s initiative of Taking the Trail! We began our day at the Nature Center and followed Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore employee Brad Bumgardner as he led a program on feeding the birds and how to be safe outdoors. After interviewing a few families and visitors at the Nature Center and Kathy advising various groups on the perfect trail for their day, we ended up on Trail 9. The lush, green view along the trail was incredible with every step.
It was exciting to see hikers and bikers along the trail that we had spoken to, and seeing people hold true to their promise of Taking the Trail. It was great to see so many families spending their holiday week at the Indiana Dunes!
Trail 9 is one of Kathy’s favorites at the Dunes. It winds through the forest, nature alive and all around us until it splits into Trail 9 High and Trail 9 Low. We headed up the incline where the path got sandier and sunnier towards the beach. At the top of Trail 9 we had an amazing view of the waterfront. To our left was beach and sand, to our right down a steep ridge were treetops. The sight was breathtaking–and not just because we had walked uphill to reach it!
