Purdue University was selected to participate in the United States Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, a high profile international competition where 20 collegiate teams design, build, and operate solar powered houses. While the competitive aspect of the Solar Decathlon is exciting, the real goal is to educate college students and the general public sustainable communities. The decathlon consists of ten portions: architecture, market appeal, engineering, communications, affordability, comfort zone, hot water, appliances, home entertainment, and energy balance. The team with the highest overall score will be given the title of US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 winner.
The competition will take place at the National Mall in Washington D.C. from September 23 to October 2, 2011. The houses will be open to the public for tours.
